          The Western Region Megapolis Planning Project in Sri Lanka. Megapolis is a variant of the Greek word megalopolis , meaning a large city or urban area.

         On the 23rd of April 2015 The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal to prepare the Western Region Megapolis Plan (WRMPP). The objective of the fore mentioned plan is to serve as the main form of guidance on all future developments. This in turn will enable the transformation of the Western Region to internationally acclaimed standards through a series of large scale projects.

         Colombo core area divided into 12 planning areas; Pettah to be turned into leisure centre with harbour front district. The plan which will also focus on pedestrian traffic and parking management.

         The plan includes business centres in the financial district around Pettah, a recreation and entertainment district around Beira Lake, a shopping district around Slave Island and a harbour front district.

         The proposal includes a comprehensive plan to address the problem of shanty dwellers with low-income groups to be housed in a flat complex that would not exceed more than six floors and a 15-floor flats complex for mid income families.

Google’s Project Loon enters Sri Lankan airspace

Google “Project Loon” balloon enters Sri Lanka for Internet tests.

           Earlier today it was confirmed that Google Loon has entered Sri Lankan airspace and that tests will be conducted in Sri Lanka in the coming weeks. Balloon powered internet for everyone, that is Google’s final aim. Project Loon launched by American tech giant Google is a network of balloons travelling on the edge of space designed to connect people in rural and remote areas.

          Project Loon began with a pilot test in June 2013, when thirty balloons were launched from New Zealand’s South Island and as of this evening Google loon balloons were off the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
 

            Project Loon balloons will travel about 20 km above the earth’s surface, in comparison a normal passenger plan travel at at altitude of about 10 km. Twenty kilo metres mean the balloons will be travelling in the stratosphere well above weather events, wildlife and airplanes.

     
            Each helium-based balloon can remain operational at this altitude for about 100 days and provide LTE internet coverage to a ground area about 80 km in diameter. The balloons relay wireless traffic from cell phones and other devices back to the global Internet using high-speed links.

Sri Lanka's 68th Independence Day

   Sri Lanka's 68th Independence Day on February 4th celebrated at the Galle Face Green in Colombo under the theme " One Nation, Great Power " (“Ekama Deyak, Maha Balayak”).

    The main ceremony including tri forces guard of honor and procession will be held at 9.00 am under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

   Two main events have been planned to celebrate the Independence Day. A military parade would be held in the morning and a cultural pageant will be held in the evening.
