Lightning Risk Areas in Sri Lanka.

         Lightning is a natural disaster and it causes death and damage all over the globe. It continues to be a frequent killer. According to the data available to us in Sri Lanka, the areas with highest record of lightning damage are Kalutara, Matugama, Horana, Padukka, Ingiriya, Bulathsinghala, Avissawella, Yatiyantota, Akuressa, Malabe, Biyagama, Weliveriya, Yakkala, Nittambuwa, Katunayake, Colombo, Ratmalana. However there are many small pockets all over the country where severe lightning damage has been reported. Although the acute lightning seasons in the country are March, April and October, November, for the last few years we observe thunderstorm activities scattered through out the year.

Colombo Port City

         The 269 hectares of land of the Colombo Port City was officially declared part of Sri Lanka during an event this evening. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Cheng Xueyuan graced the occasion.

The Sri Pada Pilgrim season begins today

The Sri Pada Pilgrim season begins today - 11^th December 2019 (Unduwap Full Moon Poya Day).

      The pilgrim season will begin after the Casket of Relics and statues of God Saman are placed at the Sri Pada Maluwa on December 11.

      They will be kept there for veneration of devotees for a period of six months. The pilgrim season will conclude on Vesak Poya Day 2020 after which the Casket of Relics and the statues would be taken back to the Pelmadulla Galpottawala Sri Pada Viharaya.

Sri Lanka’s Caroline Jurie crowned Mrs World 2020.

      Caroline Jurie from Sri Lanka was crowned Mrs. World 2020 at the world pageant held in Las Vegas, USA.

       She competed with contestants from nearly 51 countries in the world. Ireland was the 1st runner up while US Virgin Islands was the 2nd runner up.

       The last time Sri Lanka won the title was way back in 1984 where Rosy Senanayake was crowned Mrs. World at the Pageant.
         Jurie who was crowned Mrs. Sri Lanka in October this year, won the Mrs. World 2020 pageant held in Las Vegas, United States on Saturday (07^th December 2019). She won the pageant by competing with 51 other contestants.

Conan the hero dog

President Donald Trump recognized Conan, the hero dog who was injured during a raid which led to the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, at the White House 

              President Trump honored one of our K-9 military heroes at the White House. The president welcomed Conan, a Belgian Malinois who was injured in October when he chased ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi into a tunnel in Syria and Baghdadi killed himself and two of his children by detonating his suicide vest.

          The president presented a certificate and an award to Conan, who has recovered from his injuries. Trump said: “The dog is incredible … so brilliant – so smart … Conan did a fantastic job. We’re very honored to have Conan here.”

     Conan is a special operations military working dog in the United States 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force). He is a male Belgian Malinois and was named after Conan O'Brien due to his shaggy hair.

First lady Melania Trump receives White House Christmas tree

       First lady Melania Trump kicked off the holiday season in the nation's capital by accepting delivery of the official White House Christmas tree.

        A horse-drawn carriage delivered the tree to the front door of the White House on Monday as members of a military band played Christmas music.

     The first lady walked around the carriage and inspected the tree, which will become the centerpiece of Christmas in the White House Blue Room.

      She was wearing a striking Dolce & Gabbana knee-length black-trimmed coat with a large embroidered red floral pattern on a black background, over a back dress and stiletto-heeled black suede boots with a red sole by Christian Louboutin. 

         The tree came from Mahantongo Valley Farms in Pitman, Pennsylvania. Owner Larry Snyder earned the honor of presenting the White House a tree from his farm after winning the annual contest held by the National Christmas Tree Association.

Twitter account deletions on 'pause' after outcry.

         Twitter has said it will "pause" plans to disable inactive accounts following user backlash, a day after announcing plans for a huge cull of such accounts.

         The social network said it now would not remove accounts until it had a process for "memorialising" dead users on the network. It admitted not having a policy in place was a "miss on their part" The firm said it was taking action on inactive accounts due to regulatory concerns.

        President Gotabaya Rajapaksa arrived in New Delhi yesterday commencing his two-day official visit in India. The President is scheduled to meet Indian President Shri Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit.

       He was warmly welcomed on his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International airport. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is visiting India on an invitation extended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Indian visit of President Rajapaksa is his first overseas tour after he took office.

        The Tesla Cybertruck is an all-electric battery-powered light commercial vehicle in development by Tesla, Inc. Three models have been announced, with range estimates of 250–500 miles (400–800 km) and an estimated 0–60 mph time of 6.5–2.9 seconds, depending on the model.

        The stated goal of Tesla in developing Cybertruck is to provide a sustainable energy substitute for the roughly 6,500 fossil fuel powered trucks sold per day in the US. The base price of the rear-wheel drive model of the vehicle will be $39,900, with all-wheel drive models starting at $49,900.

Lamasooriya Valley

            Lamasooriya Valley is beutyfull Location in Sri Lanka. Lamasooriya Village is encircled by the Lihiniyagala, Ethibedigala, Bambaragala and Naranthalawa hills. The fields are irrigated with the waters of the Beliul Oya which originates in Kabaragala and flows through the valley. Its water is diverted above the valley at the Lamasuriya and Serupitiya anicuts which flow on the upper periphery of the left and right bank fields respectively. The Beliuloya is a tributary of the Mahaweli and should not be mistaken with the Belihul Oya which originates in the Horton Plains and flows into the Samanalawewa Reservoir. According to villagers the Lamasooriya anicut was said to have been built in 1847 by the British.
