Lightning Risk Areas in Sri Lanka         Lightning is a natural disaster and it causes death and damage all over the globe. It continues to be a frequent killer. According to the data available to us in Sri Lanka, the areas with highest record of lightning damage are Kalutara, Matugama, Horana, Padukka, Ingiriya, Bulathsinghala, Avissawella, Yatiyantota, Akuressa, Malabe, Biyagama, Weliveriya, Yakkala, Nittambuwa, Katunayake, Colombo, Ratmalana. However there are many small pockets all over the country where severe lightning damage has been reported. Although the acute lightning seasons in the country are March, April and October, November, for the last few years we observe thunderstorm activities scattered through out the year.

         The 269 hectares of land of the Colombo Port City was officially declared part of Sri Lanka during an event this evening. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Cheng Xueyuan graced the occasion.

The Sri Pada Pilgrim season begins today

The Sri Pada Pilgrim season begins today - 11th December 2019 (Unduwap Full Moon Poya Day).

      The pilgrim season will begin after the Casket of Relics and statues of God Saman are placed at the Sri Pada Maluwa on December 11.

      They will be kept there for veneration of devotees for a period of six months. The pilgrim season will conclude on Vesak Poya Day 2020 after which the Casket of Relics and the statues would be taken back to the Pelmadulla Galpottawala Sri Pada Viharaya.

Caroline Jurie crowned Mrs World 2020

      Caroline Jurie from Sri Lanka was crowned Mrs. World 2020 at the world pageant held in Las Vegas, USA.
       She competed with contestants from nearly 51 countries in the world. Ireland was the 1st runner up while US Virgin Islands was the 2nd runner up.
       The last time Sri Lanka won the title was way back in 1984 where Rosy Senanayake was crowned Mrs. World at the Pageant.
         Jurie who was crowned Mrs. Sri Lanka in October this year, won the Mrs. World 2020 pageant held in Las Vegas, United States on Saturday (07th December 2019). She won the pageant by competing with 51 other contestants.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day               World AIDS Day, designated on 1 December every year since 1988, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease.
